Shireen Azam

Shireen Azam is Lecturer and PhD researcher at the University of Oxford, UK, at the department of Religious Studies. Her research explores the political relevance of caste in Indian Muslims, and uses caste to reinterpret the incessantly uttered category of the “Muslim” in modern India.

Shireen’s work has been at the intersection of academia and journalism, and in making research accessible for a wider readership. She was formerly Assistant Editor at India’s premier journal Economic & Political Weekly, where she founded the digital initiative EPW Engage in 2017, opening a new chapter for the 7-decade-old journal. Most importantly perhaps, Shireen has also been an intern at the Caravan at some point.
