OK Johnny is a renowned journalist, writer, documentary director and film critic.
He has won the President’s Award for Best Documentary Film twice – for his
debut film The Trapped and his next film, Silent Screams: A Village Chronicle. 

OK Johnny was born on 22 August 1957, in Wayanad and was educated at Sulthan
Bathery, Mysore and Payyannur. He began his career as a journalist with a job as a
reporter at Kerala Kaumudi and Press Trust of India (PTI). He went on to be the
editor of the first agricultural and environmental magazine, Karshikarangam, in
Malayalam. Later, he became the Editorial Head of Mathrubhumi Books.

As a director, OK Johnny has made nine documentaries, which earned him
National and State Awards. He has collaborated with Doordarshan’s national
network to direct a biographical documentary, Portrait of CK Janu, produced by
the Public Service Broadcasting Trust, and has also made a travel documentary
series, Ayalkazhchakal, for Kairali TV. He won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi
Award in 2015 for his travelogue Bhutan Dinangal. His major works include
Nishabda Nilavilikal:Oru Grama Puraavritham, Kaveriyodoppam Ente Yathrakal,
Wayanad Rekhakal and Cinemayude Varthamanam. He has also served as a
member of the Kerala State Film Awards Committee, and the National Film
Awards jury.

മാധ്യമപ്രവർത്തകൻ, എഴുത്തുകാരൻ, ഡോക്യുമെന്ററി സംവിധായകൻ, ചലച്ചിത്ര നിരൂപകൻ എന്നീ നിലകളിൽ ശ്രദ്ധേയ സാന്നിധ്യം. മികച്ച ഡോക്യുമെന്ററി സിനിമയ്ക്കുള്ള രാഷ്ട്രപതിയുടെ ദേശീയ പുരസ്‌കാരം രണ്ട് തവണ ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ആദ്യചിത്രമായ ‘ദി ട്രാപ്ഡ് ’ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച നരവംശശാസ്‌ത്ര ചിത്രത്തിനുളള രാഷ്‌ട്രപതിയുടെ ബഹുമതിക്കർഹമായി.
രണ്ടാമത്തെ ചിത്രം ‘സൈലന്റ് സ്ക്രീം: എ വില്ലേജ് ക്രോണിക്കിൾ ’
സാമൂഹികപ്രശ്‌നങ്ങൾ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്ത ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച ചിത്രത്തിനുളള 1997-ലെ രാഷ്‌ട്രപതിയുടെ അവാർഡും, മികച്ച ഡോക്യുമെന്റി സിനിമയ്‌ക്കുളള കേരള സംസ്ഥാന അവാർഡും നേടി.

1957 ആഗസ്റ്റ് 22 ന് വയനാട്ടിൽ ആണ് ഒ.കെ ജോണി ജനിച്ചത്.
സുൽത്താൻ ബത്തേരി, പയ്യന്നൂർ, മൈസൂർ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലായി
വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം. കേരള കൗമുദിയിലും പ്രസ് ട്രസ്റ്റ് ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യയിലും
(പി.ടി.ഐ) റിപ്പോർട്ടറായി പത്രപ്രവർത്തനം ആരംഭിച്ചു.
മലയാളത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ കാർഷിക-പരിസ്ഥിതി മാസികയുടെ
(കാർഷികരംഗം) എഡിറ്ററായിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട് മാതൃഭൂമി ബുക്‌സിന്റെ
എഡിറ്റോറിയൽ മേധാവിയായി. ദേശീയ ചലച്ചിത്ര അവാർഡു നിർണയ ജൂറിയിലും, കേരള സംസ്‌ഥാന ചലച്ചിത്ര അവാർഡു കമ്മിറ്റിയിലും അംഗമായിരുന്നു.

ഒമ്പത്‌ ഡോക്യുമെന്ററികൾ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. ദൂരദർശന്റെ
ദേശീയ ശൃംഖലയ്ക്കുവേണ്ടി പബ്ലിക് സർവീസ് ബ്രോഡ്കാസ്റ്റിങ്ങ് ട്രസ്റ്റ് (PSBT) നിർമ്മിച്ച ‘പോർട്രേറ്റ്‌ ഓഫ്‌ സി.കെ.ജാനു’ എന്ന ജീവചരിത്ര ഡോക്യുമെന്ററിയും, കൈരളി ടിവിയ്‌ക്കുവേണ്ടി ‘അയൽക്കാഴ്‌ചകൾ’ എന്നൊരു ട്രാവൽ ഡോക്യുമെന്ററി പരമ്പരയും സംവിധാനം ചെയ്‌തു.
2015 ൽ ‘ഭൂട്ടാൻ ദിനങ്ങൾ’ എന്ന യാത്രാ വിവരണ ഗ്രന്ഥത്തിന് കേരള
സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാർഡ് ലഭിച്ചു.
നിശ്ശബ്ദനിലവിളികൾ ഒരു ഗ്രാമപുരാവൃത്തം, കാവേരിയോടൊപ്പം
